Many Filipino artist known Apo Whang Od as the last traditional tattoo artist in the Philippines. The “manwhatok” is traditional for male, but Apo Whang Od is one of the few female who is doing this kind of traditional art. When she start her tattooing career, she was considered the best in her village and she was recognized by her community. She uses traditional process in tattooing as much as possible.
Whang Od Oggay who also known as Apo Whang Od or Maria Oggay, she is 103 years old and lived in the mountain Province of Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga. Even in his old age, she still helps to preserve the ancient tradition in their province. Many people visit Whang Od in the Buscalan Mountains and it is a 15 hours of flight from Manila. It is also possible to get to the Buscalan Mountains by climbing the mountain. That is why it is a great sacrifice to visit tattσσ artist Apo Whang Od. Using the ash and thorns of the pomelo, Apo Whang Od tattooed three dots on the skin of her customers.
At the age of fifteen, Apo Whang Od began studying tattoo in the care of her father. Whang Od was great even though this tradition was only for the men in their tribe. Apo Whang Od has become even more viral today because of the spreading image of her when she was young lady.
Many were impressed by the beauty of Apo Whang Od when she was young and it can still be seen even if she is 103 years old. Apo Whang Od remains strong and in good health. De spite of her beautiful face, Whang Od did not have a chance to create her own family, because of her vow to her late boyfriend when she was young. According to Apo Whang Od, she does not eat foods with preservatives and canned and greasy foods so she maintains his good health.
Today, Apo Whang Od is teaching his two nieces to keep the traditional “mambabatσk” will still alive in the Philippines. She is considered as a human artifacts in the Philippine History because of her preserved natural artworks.
